The Littlefield House is the last renant of 19th century Victorian arhitechture. Commissioned by Major George Littlefield, a Confederate general and benefactor, remembered also as a southern gentleman, for $500,000, the house is now surrounded by the University of Texas at Austin. There are many ghostly tales associated with the Litllefield House. Staff members have resported very unsettling accounts of young chidlren perceiving the presence of a ghost in the house. One employee's eight-year-old granddaughter reportedly said that she "smelled like a ghost" when she gave her a hug after a long work day.It is said that all staff agree that they've felt a sense of unease when they were inside the home. Those who believe in ghosts say the house is haunted by it's former mistress Alice Littlefield, who is said to have stayed in the home most of the time. SOme say they hear her playing piano at night. Others have seen an apparition they believe to be Alice on the second floor of the home. Staff reported that some items were moved from their normal locations over a school break.

The piano music from the second floor is Schubert. Was Alice Littlefield this advanced in her studies? Just wondering.

  • MAYBE IT'S NOT ALICE LITTLEFIELD PLAYING THE PIANO

When I was a piano student at UT in the 1960's, I used to practice on Sunday afternoons in the studio of my piano teacher, Verna Harder. She had the large room on the second floor surrounded by the veranda. I had my own key, and I loved to be there alone and practice as long as I wanted, without interruption. But, I wasn't alone. I heard foot steps, doors closing and various other noises, and there was simply no explanation for it. It didn't frighten me at all. I was intrigued. Verna Harder was a very respected piano teacher for many years at UT and she had many students. It is not surprising to me that the sound of a piano is heard from the second floor.
