General Sam Houston is buried in this cemetery and it is also the home to a statue commonly called "Black Jesus." Legend says the bronze statue was erected over the grave of a five year old boy, and it soon turned deep black. No matter how much the statue was cleaned, its bronze color did not come back. It has been reported that even though the statue is posed with Jesus' hands palm up, at times during the night it can be seen with his palms facing down.

  • Husband an I saw black shadows of children and 1 woman

In the late 70's my husband and I on way to Galveston stopped to walk around the graveyard. We noticed many small children had died. Getting back in the car. I said that was a creepy graveyard. My husband said it sure was. Then he described what I saw. I said what? I saw that too but was too embarrassed to say! We both saw children running between headstones like hide and seek. I saw a woman in a long dress bending over chasing children. My husband saw the woman standing upright peeking around a tree. They were clear black silouettes. Not cloudy but sharp. Diptheria was listed on headstones of some children. Will never forget this.
