Many believe this creek was named after La Larona (the Weeping Woman), who is known as the Hispanic boogey-woman. She has appeared everywhere and the story has always been this: a woman drowns her child in a lake/pond/ocean/bathtub/drainage ditch and then spends the rest of eternity waiting for her lost child, desperately looking for it. It is said that if you get too close to where she is haunting/searching for her child, she will pull you in, hoping you are her child. This has caused many drownings in the area.
