This plaza preserves an intact example of a border town in the lower Rio Grande Valley. From 1829 to the 1880s, the town was an important port and transshipment point on the Rio Grande. This plaza is believed to be haunted by the apparition of a beautiful girl in a flowy white dress. She has been seen in the plaza area outside the church late at night. There have also been reports of crying when no one is around.
