The Emily Morgan Hotel - Real Haunts in San Antonio TX

  • 705 E Houston Street
  • San Antonio, TX

Located on East Houston Street in San Antonio, The Emily Morgan Hotel was built in 1924 as the Medical Arts Building. The building was home to a variety of doctor's offices and a 5-bed hospital. In 1976, the building was converted to an office space. It wasn't until 1984 that it was remodeled and renamed to The Emily Morgan Hotel.

The location has been noticed by the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Alamo Plaza Historic District in 1977 and was inducted into the Historic Hotels of American Organization in 2015. The hotel is home to some eerie tales and in 2015, USA Today even dubbed it the third most haunted hotel in the world.

The most haunted floors of the hotel are said to be the seventh, ninth, fourteenth, and the basement. The hotel even encourages that those who want to really experience the paranormal side of the place should stay on the seventh floor. So, why these floors? It could be because most of them were used as a psychiatric ward, surgery level, waiting area and morgue. Guests have reported strange things happening on these particular floors. Reports include the sensation of feeling something cool brush up against you, even as the lingering heavy scent of medicine settles in your nose.

On the fourteenth floor, the smell is acutely reminiscent of a hospital. Guests have reported to opening the doors to the hallways only to find a scene from a hospital waiting right inside. Additional reports of hauntings at the hotel include lights turning on and off on their own, apparitions of nurses being spotted, and the elevators seem to have a mind of their own. If you're already afraid of elevators, maybe it's best to take the stairs if you plan to stay the night!

While staying here with my cousins, we didn’t know the place was haunted until after we checked in. We just thought it was a really nice hotel close to the Alamo and Riverwalk. Elevators didn’t work properly and we got sent to the 14th floor and it smelled of chemicals and/or medicine. We shoved ourselves back into the elevator to go back down, but then it took us to the basement where the mailroom was. It was as if time itself was frozen down there. We had immediately forgotten we were running away from something out of fear and wandered out of the elevator looking at the empty room as if it had something to tell us and we couldn’t decipher the message. We lost track of time down there and had no urgency to leave the place. Over half an hour later, we realized we needed to get back to our rooms because we had plans on going out that night and we completely forgot we were trying to get to our rooms from the very beginning. Something about the air in this place confused us all and fogged up our heads. We decided to take the stairs back up to the lobby and had to ask the woman at the desk what was wrong with this place. It was then that we found out it was haunted.
